There’s something cathartic and unique about great singer-songwriters. They have an ability to invoke certain feelings in our souls, ones that we can all recognize, even if we choose not to. As the decades roll by, and technology takes music to unthinkable heights, a man with a story and an acoustic guitar will always be here; It’s stitched into the fabric of American music. From Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan to Kurt Cobain and Elliot Smith, singer-songwriters have always bared the cold truths of life for the rest of us. Because unraveling the human condition with a pick and a microphone is essential to our existence, especially in a place like New York City.
“New York City has a really high concentration of stories and unexpected experiences”, singer-songwriter Coy Cassidy says, “And those experiences always find a way into my writing”. He’s currently based in Brooklyn, but he’s lived all over the city since he moved here from the Hudson Valley. In 2011, he felt the need to get out of New York and decided to move to Arizona without thinking too much into it. He learned a lot about himself during those three years and 2018 has provided some fresh perspective. Cassidy started the year by releasing his debut single, ‘MESA’. It’s an emotional reminder of how powerful honest reflection can be. Cassidy explains, “It’s about having a front row seat to watch my life spiral out of what I thought “control” was. I thought I had lost everything important in my life, and I turned to what I shouldn’t.” ‘MESA’ is a look back on those times with a new point of view. “Things still aren’t perfect”, he says, “But I’ve grown to learn that everything is manageable.”
Times change and so do people. It’s an inevitable truth that we all have to deal with at one point or another. People walk in and out of our lives, unbothered and unfazed, like the customers of an uptown diner. Some are in a hurry to leave, while others decide to stay awhile. It’s always special when you get to watch one of those people grow as an artist and human being. Coy Cassidy is doing exactly what he’s supposed to be doing – the conviction in his lyrics tell you all that you need to know. ‘MESA’ is only the beginning. He’ll be releasing a new single soon, and is planning on a spring release for his debut EP. As the weeks turn to months, and the seasons turn to years, I have a feeling that his music will be a quiet force in the lives of many.
